Professor Shining Zhou is an expert in the field of gas prevention and control for coal mine and the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Zhou mainly focuses on the research of gas prevention and control for coal mine, the parameter mensuration technology for the coalbed gas pressure and permeability coefficient, experimental research and production application, and has been granted many inventions in the field of gas flow theory. The system of coalbed gas flow theory established by him essentially stated the source and reserve condition of coalbed gas, and started the new phase of solid-gas coupling for the study on gas flow theory. As the founder, Professor Zhou initiatively established the academic system of China’s coalbed gas geology, gas flow theory, gas prediction, gas drilling and drainage, and the prevention and control for coal and gas outburst. Professor Zhou, for a long period of time, has engaged in the prevention and control work in the coal mines suffered most from gas disaster, making great contribution to the reduction for the gas disasters. In 1986, Professor Zhou obtained the title of National Excellent Scientist and the national May 1st Labor Medal.
